FAQs

A: The University of Bristol Law Clinic is a pro bono organisation which has traditionally provided free legal advice to the community, but is now focussing on ‘StreetLaw’ a new, exciting initiative for 2011.
The Clinic is also maintaining its advice-giving element by providing local organisations with student advisers to support them with their workload.

A: Under this project, students in the Law Clinic work together to identify important legal issues concerning different sections of the local community: a presentation is delivered to those concerned with the aim to increase legal literacy and awareness of key issues of the law. Past successful presentations by the Law Clinic have included a presentation on ‘the legal implications of a house party’ given to secondary pupils at a local school. Presentations in the next academic year will include employment law and tenant’s rights which have particular relevance to students.

A: An Executive Committee of law students run the Law Clinic with the support of Professor Dave Cowan, a member of the School of Law’s academic staff and a qualified lawyer.
The Law Clinic has approximately 100 members who are available to prepare and give StreetLaw presentations to the community, in addition to providing support to local advice-giving centres.
