CLARS (Community Legal Advice and Representation Service) was shortlisted for the Attorney-General’s Award for the Best New Pro Bono activity. Unfortunately CLARS lost out to an exciting new project developed by the University of Birmingham, designed to enhance the provision of free legal advice to small businesses. Nevertheless, the team enjoyed a very pleasant tea on the terrace at the House of Lords in the company of Baroness Scotland QC and Lord Hope, amongst others.
Lexis Nexis, who sponsored the event, took the opportunity to announce the launch of a brand new free service. All LawWorks member clinics will receive free access to its Professional Legal Services systems, a full year before the programme is rolled out to paying firms!

After an extremely successful recruitment drive the Law Clinic has taken on over 70 new Student Advisers this year. All new members will undergo basic training on the 15th November 2008 and will become eligible to take on casework. The Law Clinic will be accepting new cases from the 17th November 2008.
The Law Clinic has recently formed a new collaboration with the University of the West of England, Bristol Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Western Circuit of the Bar. The aim of the arrangement is to better facilitate access to free representation for clients facing the prospect of court or tribunal hearings. Student Advisors from the Law Clinic will work together with postgraduate students of the BVC or LPC courses offered at UWE to provide a more complete service. Where necessary, the cross-institutional team will also brief and work with local barristers on a pro bono basis. All parties are especially keen to open up this facility as soon as possible and will be formally launching the scheme at the Bristol Royal Marriott, College Green on the evening of 13th November 2008. The event is anticipated to attract members of the local Bar and judiciary as well as several appellate judges and esteemed members of the Universities involved. Members of the Law Clinic keen to become involved should express such interest to their Firm Manager at the earliest opportunity. Members of the public who feel the service may be of benefit to them should contact the Law Clinic either by email, post or telephone.
